Default Chrome OS build taylored for Dell Mini 10v

The guys of the Dell Linux division have wowed the community by building and releasing their own revision of Chromium OS tailored for the Dell Mini 10v. After seeing Engadget running Chrome OS on a Vostro system, they tried fiddling with the build themselves to get it up and running on a Dell Mini 10v and succeeded.

The Chrome OS build for the Dell Mini 10v can be downloaded here.

The image itself is a hefty 7.5GB, so you'll need to download it and put it on a USB stick of at least 8GB.
Quote:
To copy onto an USB key (8GB minimum), find another Linux machine and utilize the "dd" command to put the image onto the USB key.

Example: dd if=ChromiumOS_Mini10v_Nov25.img of=/dev/sdb
Full download instructions and necessary usernames/passwords for the system are on the Direct2Dell Blog.

Although the image was purposely built for the 10v, chances are it should work fine with the Mini 9 as the hardware is practically the same - do gives us feedback if it works for you.
This is certainly one of the most interesting things a manufacturer has done so far, really embracing upcoming software, possibly even indicating a Dell Mini Chromium in the future? Don't look too much into it!

Default Chromium not ready

I installed Chromium and tried other os systems like Moblin.

The dell mini site's version of Moblin was the worst and even erased my hard drive when I hit "Tab" for more options.
You would think they would test their installer. The zones feature was even more annoying and it felt like Windows 95.

After that horrible experience I tried Chromium. After not getting sound and waiting forever for wifi... I found that the best light weight system out of the box is Jolicloud.

I have it on my mini 9 vostro and everything just works from the get go, like OSX did b4 dell's Moblin installer erased it

There is also none of the annoying things Linux can have like not being able to access or transfer files. Jolicloud just works and I recommend it for any level user. The whole os is only using 2 gigs, and their installer is a breeze and has a usb option to try it out.

The best alternative if you want to go legit on your mini OS.

Installed rather easily, and wireless worked after a bit as per the instructions. I've noticed it seems very responsive on my 10v and I'm very much interested in the direction this OS takes.

Question Minimum drive size?

I have a 10v that I'm trying out OS on and I was wondering what the smallest size flash drive I would need to install this to.

I saw the original post said 2GB, but it looks like its actually much smaller now.

I used a 2GB drive for this distro to test it out.
I think you could get away with a 1GB drive actually without problems.
It's interesting to have a look at, but has a good way to go before it is useable. Even simple stuff like remembering networks visited and providing a proper shutdown mechanism are not really there yet.
Also, relies 100% on you being internet connected and using google app.s online.
It may well be the future for mobile devices. Time will tell.

Looking forward to this as the next OS to try on my Dell Mini-10 - would like to run it from an external USB as I do with MAC OSX (rather not dual boot [K.I.S.S.])

Shame the Dell Mini 10[1010] Graphics Drivers are problematic, damn that US15W/GMA500 chipset solution

Cheers!
